Top 5 Family-Friendly Neighborhoods in Glenview

Are you curious about all the amazing neighborhoods in Glenview? Today, I’m going to give you a rundown of the top five most family-friendly neighborhoods in Glenview, IL and why I LOVE living here!

The Village of Glenview was incorporated in 1899 and is only 17 miles from the bustling city of Chicago. You can get to the city quickly with a 35-minute Metra train ride or by jumping on the Edens Expressway. Before I start, I want to say that I truly believe all of Glenview is very family-friendly with its amazing parks, schools, park district, pools, ice rinks, children’s museums, and more. But today, I am going to highlight five Glenview neighborhoods that stand out as particularly family friendly.

#5 – Tall Trees

This quiet neighborhood has only one entrance at Lake Avenue, so there is no through traffic, making it safe and peaceful. Residents can enjoy Tall Trees Park with its tennis courts and playgrounds. The Tall Trees Association also hosts exciting neighborhood events like the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, fostering a strong community spirit.

#4 – Dewes, Henley, Linneman

Bordering south of Glenview Road and west of Harlem Avenue, this neighborhood is rich in traditions. Residents celebrate with an annual Henley Street 4th of July float, Easter Egg Hunt, and Halloween festivities with over-the-top decorations, haunted houses, and trick-or-treating fun! The proximity to downtown Glenview means residents can walk to the Metra Train Station, Roosevelt Pool, Grandpa’s Place, Heinen’s Grocery Store, and Gusto’s.

#3 – Swainwood

Dating back to 1938, Swainwood lies just north of Glenview Road and west of Lehigh Avenue. Built in a former tree nursery, it was the first subdivision to focus on nature. It is home to Roosevelt Park, the Outdoor Pool/Aquatic Center, and the Field House, which offers park district camps and activities. Residents love the location’s close proximity to the Metra Train Station, Glenview Library, The Dairy Bar, and The Glenview Grind Coffee House.

#2 – Glen Oak Acres

Located east of Waukegan Road, south of Winnetka Road, and north of Lake Avenue, Glen Oak Acres offers many social events like book clubs, movie nights, block parties, and backyard socials. Residents stay connected through a community website and social association. A highlight of this neighborhood is the historic Wagner Farm, one of the last working dairy farms in Cook County, which spans 18.6 acres and is open to the public for recreation and learning.

#1 – The Glen

I have to admit I’m biased because I’ve lived in this incredible neighborhood for nearly 20 years. The Glen tops my list of family-friendly neighborhoods in Glenview. Once the largest primary training facility for the Navy, The Glen was established in 1929 and played a significant role during WWII. After the base closed in 1995, redevelopment began in 1998 and continued until 2017.

The Glen offers a town center, many walkable neighborhoods, and diverse housing options, including single-family homes, condos, and townhomes. With 40% of the land dedicated to public open space, residents can enjoy Gallery Park. The Glen boundaries are south of Willow Road, north of East Lake Avenue, and east of Waukegan Road. The Glen Town Center offers a variety of shops and eateries, including Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Von Maur Department Store, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Glenview Jewelers, Mingle Juice Bar, and Arclight Cinema. It is also home to Chicago’s premier Glen Golf Club and the Kohl’s Children’s Museum.

The Glen hosts year-round activities such as the annual Art at The Glen, car shows, live music events, the Boo Bash Spooktacular, and 4th of July fireworks visible from almost anywhere in the neighborhood.

The Glen feeds into Westbrook/Glen Grove Elementary Schools, Attea Middle School, and Glenbrook South High School.

The best way to describe The Glen is urban style living in the suburbs.

I hope you enjoyed learning about these amazing neighborhoods in Glenview and now better understand why Glenview is the BEST place to live on Chicago’s North Shore.
